MONOCLE SOCIETY ● GENERAL MANAGER, LEAD WRITIER

WEAVE WRITING SAMPLE

Weave is a storytelling game where players scan tarot-style cards in order to discover their adventures. For the 22 Story Cards, each of the following qualities were written per card for Goblins ‘R Jerks: 1 boss, 1 theme, 2 locations, 2 plot twists, 2 NPCs, 2 enemies, 2 items, 1 signature move, 2 flaws, 4 talents, 3 backstories for a total of 484 pieces of fiction and gameplay that can intersect in nearly infinite combinations.

Co-written with Kyle Kinkade, Goblins ‘R Jerks explores Fantasy through the lens of an iconic  monster struggling against the tides of adventurers. These samples are transposed from Markdown format and represent solo and collaborative efforts. Full playset document available upon request.

Goblins ‘R Jerks

Card/Type: Wanderer/Boss

Title: Kassandra Vilebane

Details: So, Vilebane is definitely not a real name, but Kassandra is the real deal. With a giant axe, two boom salt pistols, and a natural affinity for magic, she's racked up a number of gnarly scars and heroic deeds this year. 162 deeds to be specific. The wizards are watching and they're counting. She is trying to earn the coveted Adventurer of the Year Award after all. She'll stop at nothing to crush monster-kind, including goblins, in her bid for greatness. Though goblins aren't usually worth any points.

Strikes: 8

Wounds: 5

Backstories: Early Favorite

Kassandra earned the Rising Adventurer Award when she was only sixteen, but the glory went straight to her head and she spent the last years of her life in and out taverns, swinging her axe at both friends and foes. But she's cleaned up, she swears.

+ 2 GALES

+ 2 STONES

+ 1 FLAMES

+ 1 BROOKS

Talent 1: Crowd Control

Kassandra has an uncanny ability to keep groups of enemies at bay, making the kind heroics only available in childhood tales possible.

Mechanic: Kassandra gains 1 additional die when attacking a character she didn't attack last turn.

Talent 2: Swift Strike

Woh! Did you see that? I felt it.

Mechanic: Kassandra may make two actions per turn. She deals 4 Strikes of damage plus 1 additional Strike of damage for each success.

Range: MELEE, SHORT, LONG

Talent 3: Suspend Disbelief

Through a feat of strength, deadly grace, and incredible luck, Kassandra manages to face all of her enemies in one unbelievable maneuver.

Mechanic: Kassandra can make a GALES Challenge, difficulty 3. If she succeeds she may attack all characters at once.

Flaws: Flawless

No such thing.

Mechanic: Weave symbols count as successes for Kassandra, but can't be rerolled.

Inventory: Crowd Pleaser

An enchanted axe that's been crafted to spill an inordinate amount of blood. Sometimes blood just starts dripping from it for no reason. Probably nothing to worry about, right?

Mechanic: Deals 8 Strikes of damage.

Range: MELEE

Trigger: GALES + STONES + STRIKE

The axe seems to have a mind of its own, blood goes spurting everywhere. It deals damage to Kassandra in addition to its original target.

Card / Type: Serpent / Flaw

Title: Dragon's Bane

Details: You once helped slay a dragon. This might have been an accident or maybe you were caught up in some adventurer's plot. Either way, you've been marked and all dragons know what you did.

Mechanic: You lose 1 die on all Brooks Challenges against dragons and their allies. Dragons gain 1 die on all Challenges against you.

Card / Type: Dusk / Backstory

Title: Final Battler

Details: You fought in the Final Battle. At least, you thought it was the Final Battle, but after it was over everything was the same. The real question is which side did you fight for?

+ 1 FLAMES

+ 1 STONES

Card / Type: Inferno / NPC

Title: Hjorn Ashbringer

Details: Born of the fading line of fire giants, Hjorn was destined to cover the world in an endless conflagration. Fire seeps from the bright red skin of Hjorn. The flames grow as his rage rises, but Hjorn tries to remain calm. He keeps hurting everyone he loves because his body of flame immolates most folks who aren't fire giants or dragons. He wants to change. He wants to learn how to hug without burning his loved ones to a crisp, but most see him as the bringer of the end times. Steam rises from the corner of his eyes as he silently weeps.

Card / Type: Storm / Location

Title: Stormbottle Factory

Details: Across the land, stormbottles are being used with increasing regularity, powering lamps, clocks, wagons, and all manner of gadgets. In factories that resemble steel towers, the workers harvest the energy from terrible storms and seal it away in bottles with rune-inscribed tools. These factories buzz with energy. An occasional cry of pain can be heard emanating from within.

Card/Type: Architect/Plot Twist

Title: Hammer of Yjorden

Details: Yjorden, whose name confuses most, is one of the mightiest and eldest of the giants. His massive hammer towers over villages and is said to have leveled the mountains that once covered the world. What is it doing embedded in the earth here? Good luck moving something this heavy.
